Melody and her aunts by angelcarnivore Melody and her aunts by angelcarnivore
Okay, okay, okay... I'll confess- The Little Mermaid 2 is a guilty pleasure of mine. I've loved mermaids since I was a little girl, and the first Little Mermaid is to date my favorite animated film, ever. Period. But the sequel has some really atrocious gaps in logic, characterization and.. oh god I could rant for days about how many things are wrong in that film. Yet I like watching it. The best thing about it is Titanic Tip and Daring Dash: Adventures/Explorers... although Melody really does grow on you.

Anyway, it's insane that none of Ariel's sisters show up in the film and are not even mentioned in passing. Someone seeing this movie first would probably somehow surmise Ariel was an only child.

So in order to cheer myself up, I watched the first movie, then the second, and then got to thinking about possible fanfic. Anyway, more art to come.

And for those looking for color reference- IT was so incredibly hard to find the color of Abella's tail (Abella and Alana are the only two we don't see singing their names, but the way they line up, I believe Abella is the mermaid with the pink tail and Alana is the mermaid with the sort of olive color tail.) and it's nearly impossible to find good reference on the internet, and this is very close, so you can use this pic for reference if you wanna.

Someone really needs to do a screencap site for the Little Mermaid movies that do not solely focus on a billion shots of Ariel. Honestly, I could draw her in my sleep.

Greatly enjoying the various expressions of Melody and her aunts.  Always loved "TLM" since I saw it as a little girl in Pre-school.  Wonderful digital painting, and I have yet to see the new "The Little Mermaid 3" movie.  It's so much fun to draw the mer folk of the ocean, no? ^_____^ :highfive:

It is! I love mermaids- the third movie is actually pretty good- a little dated, but it's based on the Dancing Princesses fairytale, so I have no complaints, lol.

I wouldn't say Ariel's Beginning was actually good. I'm a bit of a continuity junkie, and I get extremely irritated when they do things that don't even match up with the original film at all, especially if it was a prequel. And unfortunately, there were plenty of continuity errors and far too many instances of characters being out-of-character (and to make matters worse on that end, the OOC elements weren't written to even take into account the original film and have them gradually develop into the characterizations of the original film) to view it as good. Take how Flounder was depicted in that movie for example: He was depicted as a beatboxing laid-back almost Sonic the Hedgehog-like character, completely unlike how he was depicted in the original film where he was a huge worrywart. And the film also got Ariel's Sisters birth order wrong. Even if you ignore the TV series, the original movie already strongly implied their birth order anyways, and it was definitely not the birth order given in Ariel's Beginning. And why on earth would Ariel have to wait a year to join the band when she was basically the reason Atlantica even HAS music now? Plus, there didn't seem to be any hint at Ariel even developing a fascination for human objects at all, and this was despite it being a pretty huge part of Ariel's characterization, arguably moreso than her rebellious nature. Not to mention, how Athena's death was handled and especially Triton's reaction heavily contradicted Triton's character (first of all, Triton's description of humans would imply they potentially killed Athena with a harpoon, NOT rammed her with a ship that may not have even been intentional, and second of all, the film doesn't even hint that this gave him a hatred of humans, and in fact, if anything, music is what he hated because of that incident). Not to mention, Marina del Ray went to the surface at one point despite such an action being illegal, based on what Triton told Ariel in the original film, which is even more stupid considering this was just after she got her promotion, which would have been grounds to getting her fired at the very least. Even if you argue that he probably didn't ban surfacing in that movie, that's still contradicting the original film, where he clearly did ban surfacing and most of his fights with Ariel related to her surfacing. Honestly, even Return to the Sea was better than that garbage sorry to say. At least Return to the Sea didn't give significant, unresolvable contradictions to the original film.

But other than that, yeah, I agree, Melody really needed to interact with her aunts. Then again, that may have been a problem since she wasn't supposed to be aware of Ariel formerly being a mermaid at that point.

Very true.  Like you, Mara, I've always loved mermaids as well as the other Fair Folk of the ocean like Selkies - it's going to take me a while to find, and watch the 3rd "TLM" movie -and no problem on it is a bit dated, and I look forward to learning more about Ariel's past, lol.

It's been a long time since I did any digital paintings, and taking 4 classes in college towards an Associate's of Arts degree keeps me busy.  Not much time for my art, and tales along with sewing little rag dolls.

Yeah, a degree takes a lot of mental energies- luckily, all your creativity will be there when you have the time, plus the bonus of all experience and knowledge that will have accrued between that day and today. :)

They were there in the beggining but then dissapeared, it would have been really cool if Melody passed them on the way in Atlantica, or at least that's what I hoped.

Will tell you I love "TLM" movie, and it's a bit disappointing when Ariel's 6 sisters disappeared, and yes on it would be very cool if Melody saw them as she went to Atlantica, and this is why there's fan art and fan fiction tales. =)

I know what you mean - I actually watched the 2nd movie over again several times to see if I could spot them at all. In the beginning you see three of them, at the head of the line of merfolk but that's about it. I was disappointed that they didn't show up when Ariel went back to look for Melody - I thought that would have been a great heroic family gesture, the aunts stepping in to look for their only niece.

I like the movie, though, overall. And Ariel is my favorite next to Mulan :)

I felt personly if Melody had a sibling she be less lonely. So I gave her a younger sister Harmony. Who has red hair and wears a big blue bow in her hair. And other then her hair color she and Melody look about the same. She would be 11 and her sister Melody would be 12.

If you ever watch the old show they have the one with the pink tail and Ariel saving the castle from Crocodiles trying to raid it while everyone else is off at some fair (Ariel and her sister got "beached" because they were fighting so much). I sadly don't remember what her name was though.

Super cute picture and it's really impressive that you can fit so many people...mere-people in one picture!

It was called "Beached", actually.

EDIT: OH, you meant the sister's name. It was Arista.

Some of Ariel's sisters do appear in the film for like.. 3 seconds at the beginning. And, Alana's the pink tailed one and Adella's the olive tailed one. But it's a great pic.

i feel EXACTLY the same about TLM2 except that i don't like tip and dash :p but melody is a great character. i kinda wish her bangs were different though, everything was all a little too similar to the first for my taste.

yeah screen caps of the sisters are hard to find. i had a pic once that was pretty close to the original colors with triton surrounded by all the sisters, but..

Adella has the olive colored tail and Alana is the pinkish colored one. I just researched it on the internet, I'm doing an essay on them.

On the DVD there are some concept drawings of her sisters that lists all their names. It makes it VERY easy to know and draw each one.

Very sweet. Are the sisters really not mentioned in TLM2? How sad! They have always been my favorite characters of that movie...aside from Ariel and Ursula, of course.

I think that either Adella or Alana (the pink one with the crown) is shown hanging out with Ariel in the TV show spin-off of the movie. I think the episode name was "Electric City"...that seems to be the only canon way to tell the fifth and sixth sister apart. All I know is that the mermaid with the olive-green tail was the one who said "What is it with her lately?" when Ariel was acting all love struck over Eric.

This drawing is very well done. I like that it looks like an animation cell, very clean and simply colored. ^_^

Yeah, too bad in that film, they completely contradicted the birth order that Daughters of Triton gave in the original film, never mind the TV series.

I mean, of course, that it was the pink mermaid with the crown who was in the TV show, not that Alana is the pink mermaid. ^^;;;

Alana is the one with the pink tail and Adella is the one with the olive green tail. I find it an insult that they didn't include the sisters in the second one.

Speaking of which, any expectations that Melody will appear in a future Kingdom Hearts game? We do know that they're going to have to revisit Atlantica in a future game, thanks to Sora's vow to meet Ariel again at the ending of the Atlantica level of Kingdom Hearts II.

And actually, Ariel's sisters did show up very briefly in the beginning to observe their niece's presentation (before Morgana ruined it).
